More about Holiday Learn to Sail

Kids will use our fleet of plastic Optimist yachts which are ideal for learners. At the beginning and end of the day kids and parent/s will need to rig/de-rig the boats.

The course is designed to engage children interested in sailing after they have completed the school Waterwise course, and will take them through the YNZ Level 1 curriculum. Learning to sail can be a challenging activity, so the recommended age for programme is 10 and over but younger children may be accepted dependent on water confidence and experience.

Things you'll need to bring:

  • suitable footwear
  • a hat and sunscreen
  • warm and wind proof clothing (eg: thermals under a wetsuit)
  • a woollen jumper and a spray jacket, may also be required on cold days.

Lifejackets are provided

Does my child need to be a good swimmer

To join the Holiday Learn to Sail programme your child must be able to swim. As part of the course they will be expected to swim (by any means) at least 50 metres, dressed for sailing and with a buoyancy vest on. They will also learn to capsize and right a boat in deep water.

Next Kids Learn to Sail term:

Our kids learn to sail programme is full for the 2017 season. Dates are to be set for 2018. Register your interest and we'll let you know when bookings are open.

If you are keen to get your child sailing sooner to maximise the whole season, we are offering a new, term-based learn to sail model.

This gives junior sailors more sailing opportunities and enables greater involvement in the club.

Sailing is on Sundays marked "LTS" in the Club Calendar, with times varied to suit the tide.

What are the costs

$160 for one child
(This includes a Junior membership and a parent's Associate membership for 12 months, so you can enjoy all the club has to offer. $250 for 2 or more children from the same family, including a Family membership for 12 months)

You can deposit your course fee  into our bank account: 02-0184-0017957-00. Please use your child's name and JLTS as references.

The Learn To Sail Dinghy, Start Sailing Level 1 and Basic Skills Level 2 can be customised for:

  • Beginner adults and older youth
  • Intermediate level sailors, and those wanting a refresher course
  • Parent/child combinations

The course is made up of rigging and an onshore simulator session, followed by on-the-water sail training, in Topaz boats. These boats are great for learning and training, and can also be tweaked up for more experienced sailors.

After the course you have the option of joining FBYC and using our fleet of Topaz sailing dinghies to improve your skills, with advice and support from other club members. If you decide you are hooked and would like to have your own boat, we’ll help you out with boat-buying advice too.

  • warm lothing, such as thermals under a wetsuit
  • spray jacket or windbreaker
